Dear Sierra Nevada Families:
The Musical
Musical rehearsals are now well underway! We will continue our once a week rehearsals until we get to the week before the production. Everything is coming along nicely. I’m excited for you all to see it. Admission is free and the house holds 296 people, so feel free to invite family and friends!
We will be working very hard in the coming weeks to prepare for the Stone Soup Musical to be presented at the Sierra 2 Theatre on Thursday, May 30th. The actual performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. All of the children will need to be at the theatre at 5:00 p.m. for rehearsal. It is extremely important that everyone is there at 5:00 p.m. for this rehearsal as it is the only time we will be rehearsing on the stage. My hope is that we can rehearse from 5:00 – 6:00 and let the children get a little dinner/hearty snack break from 6:00 – 6:30. There will be plenty of seats, so feel free to invite family and friends!
Ideally, the children will arrive at the theatre, in their costumes, by 5:00 p.m. I recognize that because of work schedules, this will not be possible for everyone. If you are unable to make this work for your family, please let me know and we will work to find a ride to the theatre for your child. Just make sure to send your child’s costume and extra food for before rehearsal to school on the 30th so that he/she will be prepared. If you can help to drive other children to the theatre that evening, please let me know how many children (including your child) that you can take in your car. Robyn will check in with you as we get closer to the performance date to make sure that everyone has adequate arrangements and to remind you about logistics.
Costumes
The setting for our play is “Old Town” which is described as a sad little town that had fallen on hard times.
Townspeople: (everyone but the three travelers and the narrators): The townspeople should wear comfortable every day clothing: jeans and overalls, bright-colored dresses with aprons, etc. No need to buy anything new or fancy. Just something plain is perfectly fine.
Travelers: The three travelers should have rather ragged and dusty clothing and backpacks or sacks made from rustic-looking cloth, such as burlap.
Narrators: They may be dressed as townspeople or modern day – whichever they prefer.
Props
Here is a list of props needed for the play. We will not need these props until May and really have no good place to store them before then, but please keep your eyes out for the following:
· Brooms, shovels, plants, paint brushes
· Fancy small cloth bag containing three stones
· Cooking pot (large)
· Wood logs – real or fake
· Buckets for water
· Ingredients for soup: pepper, salt, carrots, onion, beef or beef bones, potatoes, mushrooms, cabbage.
· Blankets
· Cups, plates, bowls
We will probably also need some large cardboard refrigerator-sized boxes for our sets, so please set those aside for us, as well!
Parent Book Club
The following is an excerpt from Wendy’s San Gabriel parent letter. I haven’t read the book yet, but am looking forward to it as well as seeing all of you. I really enjoyed the last Book Club meeting and am happy that we are holding this event again!
Wendy writes:
“We will be reading Dr. Rob Mackenzie’s book, Setting Limits and Patty and I will be leading a discussion. My husband and I thought this book was one of the most important that we read when we had school-aged children. It is pragmatic and focuses on natural consequences that make sense. In fact, I realize that I use his ideas in the classroom all the time! Join us at 6:30 on May 1. Patty and I will bring some snacks.
Pick it up ASAP and get started reading!”
I hope that you all have a great weekend!
Patty
