As we help to foster the independence of children in our community, there are things you can also do to help support your child:
Upon entering the school building, allow children to walk to the classroom on their own instead of being carried. This simple act of independence allows for the child to build his or her self-esteem, and allows them to feel confident in themselves.
When children are comfortable and confident with walking into the classroom, you can allow them to hang up their own lunchboxes and jackets.
All of these simple tasks that we unconsciously do for our children hinder their independence and the development of their will.
Young children have no real concept of time, but as parents we lead busy lives. To help support your children in their growth and independence, it is important to slow down and allow for an extra 10-15 minutes in your daily routines.
